The Charger men's and women's cross country teams enter the next phase of postseason competition this weekend when they head to Cedarville, Ohio to compete at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Meet.
The women's 6K race gets everything started at 10:30 a.m., with the men's 8K race to follow at 11:45 a.m. Saturday. The races will be held at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course.
The women's team is fresh off capturing the 2017 Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship in Nashville two weeks ago and is hoping to get a similar performance at regionals. Five Hillsdale runners placed in the top 11 at the conference meet, and head coach Andrew Towne is hoping to see more of the same this weekend.
"We're excited for this weekend," Towne said. "The girls performed really well at the G-MAC championships and I think they're ready to take what they learned at that championship and apply it this weekend."
Hillsdale's women's team heads into Saturday's race ranked 8th in Division II. In addition to beating out national contenders Walsh and Malone at G-MACs, the Chargers will square off against nationally ranked teams from Grand Valley State (No. 2), Northern Michigan (No. 17) and Southern Indiana (No. 23) at this weekend's regional race.
The Charger men's team placed fourth at the G-MAC championships two weeks ago, giving a valiant effort while two of its top runners have been sidelined due to injuries.
"We're eager to get back on the course and give it our best effort to date this weekend," Towne said of his men's team. "We're going to give it our best and see where the chips fall."
