Hillsdale Hosts the Wide Track Classic

The Hillsdale College Men's track team played host to one of the larger indoor Division II track meets in the Midwest this weekend at the two-day Hillsdale Wide Track Classic.

Chargers measured up to the competition with first-place finishes in three events. Freshman Ty Etchemendy set an NCAA provisional mark with a jump of 14.40 meters in the triple jump. Senior Maurice Jones broke the tape in 49.05 seconds in the 400 meter championship, also meeting a provisional time.

The 4x400 meter relay team (Etchemendy, Matthew Raffin, Elliot Murphy, and Jones) finished first with a time of 3:18.34. This time also broke the Hillsdale College record in this event of 3:20.34, that was set last season by the team consisting of Jared Van Dyke, Jones, Raffin, and Murphy.

Raffin also met a provisional mark in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.26, a performance that earned him fourth place in the event.

The runners went the distance, reaching top finishes. In the 5000 meter championship, Junior Joshua Mirth took fourth place with time of 14:59.70. Junior John Butler took ninth in the same event with his time of 15:27.08. Freshman Thomas Grayson took fourth in the 5000 meter run, crossing the finish line with a time of 15:52.00. Junior John Wierenga finished right behind with a time of 15:52.69, taking fifth place. Sophomore Kevin Frost finished fifth in the mile run with his time of 4:30.60. In the mile run championship, freshman Caleb Gatchell finished with a time of 4:23.07, taking seventh. In the 3000 meter run, senior Matthew Van Egmond finished ninth with a time of 8:56.57.

Both of the Chargers' distance medley teams met the top ten in the event. Team "A" (Van Egmond, Van Dyke, Fr. Joseph Newcomb, and Mirth) took sixth place with a time of 10:37.24. Team "B" (Fr. Pietro Moran, Fr. Ryan Zemel, Jr. Shane Zemel, and Frost) finished ninth with a time of 11:01.57.

In the 400 meter dash, Van Dyke took fifth with his time of 50.94. Sophomore Nicholas Shuster took fifth in the high jump jump off, leaping 1.96 meters. In the pole vault, sophomore Matthew Harris vaulted 4.35 meters for a seventh place finish. Senior Brett Dailey took seventh in the weight throw with a 16.65 meter mark.

The Chargers will continue their season Feb. 14-15, competing at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale.
