A hard-working and highly respected member of the Hillsdale College women's track team was recognized for her season-opening indoor track performance Monday afternoon.
Senior Rachael Tolsma was the first recipient of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week. The award was announced and chosen by the conference office.
A former indoor track All-American, Tolsma made a big splash in the first meet of her final indoor track season. She set a new conference record in the weight throw, taking first place at SVSU with a throw of 17.21 meters. The win came as part of the SVSU Holiday Open, held at Saginaw Valley State's indoor facility Saturday.
Tolsma later finished fourth overall in the shot put with a throw of 12.58 meters. She was third in that event among attached college athletes, and beat five Division I athletes in that event.
A team captain, Tolsma hails from Hamilton, Michigan.
