May 8, 2013 - They embraced standing up, laying down, rolling in the mix of exhaustion and elation.
Hillsdale College's 4x400 meter relay team of Erin Benjamin, Becky Caywood, Corinne Zehner and Kayla Caldwell made history at Wednesday's Hillsdale Classic, finally breaking the school record this team had come so close to on so many occasions.
Each runner finished her split between 56.2 and 56.8 seconds, finishing with a final time of 3:46.40, smashing the old record by five seconds. It remains to be seen if that time will be good enough to qualify the team for the NCAA Division II championships. The final national meet qualifiers will be announced at noon Tuesday.
Caldwell was a member of the 2010 4x400 relay team that previously held that record. By way of comparison, that team not only qualified for nationals, but was an All-American unit. It speaks to the strength of Division II track this season that the 2013 team's time is on the borderline of even qualifying.
A few members of the team will compete at home one more time, Thursday afternoon at the Charger Classic. Field events start at 12:30, with running events scheduled for 4 p.m.
