Women Finish 7th at 2013 GLIAC Indoor Championships

February 23, 2013 - The Hillsdale College women's track team finished in seventh place at the 2013 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with 36 points. The meet was held over two days this weekend, at Grand Valley State University.

The headlining act of day one was the distance medley relay team of Victoria McCaffrey, Erin Benjamin, Amy Kerst and Emily Oren, who won the conference title with a time of 11:51.57. That was also good for an NCAA provo mark. Oren, the anchor of that group, went on to turn in an impressive fifth-place finish in the mile run with a time of 5:02.50.

Freshman Danielle Gagne qualified for the finals of the 200 meter dash, flying through the event with a time of 25.6 seconds. She followed that up by taking fifth overall, with a finals time of 25.54 seconds.

Senior Kayla Caldwell finished in third place in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 4 1/2 inches. The women's pole vault event at the GLIAC championships is as good as any Division I meet would be, given that three GLIAC pole vaulters have been among the nation's top 10 overall in the event during the indoor season.

For comparison, the winning pole vault mark of 14 feet, 2 inches is the second-highest ever recorded in NCAA Division II history.

Another ultra-competitive race was the 800 meter run. Although Amy Kerst had a fantastic race, she took third with a time of 2:11.36. That time was .43 seconds faster than the old conference meet record, but this turned out to be an unprecedented year in this particular event.

The 4x400 relay team of Benjamin, Becky Caywood, Corinne Zehner and Gagne finished in seventh, scoring two points with its time of 3:58.96.

Senior Adrianna Yancho enjoyed her best finish at the GLIAC meet in the high jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 5 feet, 5 1/4 inches. She actually notched the second-best mark of the meet in the high jump, but lost tiebreakers to three other jumpers.
