February 15, 2013 - The GVSU Tune-Up Meet helps prepare athletes get ready to compeet at next weekend's GLIAC Indoor Track Championships. Considering how many first, second and third-place finishes the Chargers racked up, consider them ready.
No team scores were kept at the meet, but Hillsdale had strong performers across the board, led by its All-American pole vasulter.
Senior Kayla Caldwell easily won the event by clearing 13 feet, 11 1/4 inches, not far from her own school record. That also tied the Kelly Family Center building record for the women's pole vault event, and automatically qualified her for USA Nationals.
Senior thrower Kathy Dirksen took second place in both the shot put and weight throw events. Her mark of 17.66 meters in the weight throw was good for an NCAA provo standard. Dirksen had company near the top in the shot put, as Amber Mueller finished third, and Heather Lantis was fourth in that event.
Amy Kerst (800) and Adrianna Yancho (high jump) each finished second in their respective events. Freshman Danielle Gagne and senior Becky Caywood picked up third place finishes, in the 200 and 400. Freshman Emily Oren achieved an NCAA provo mark with an impressive mile run, finishing in 5:00.12.
