December 1, 2012 - The Hillsdale College women's swimming team finished in fifth place at this weekend's three-day long Calvin College Invitational. This was the team's last official competition until after the holidays, and many members of the team broke records and achieved personal-best times throughout the 72-hour meet.
The Chargers accumulated 416 points in the meet. A total of four school records fell during the meet, coming from four different swimmers and events.
Later on, Leitner finished one spot ahead of teammate Becca Remmes in the 100 back, taking seventh and eighth overall.
Sophomore diver Gretchen Geist set a personal-best in the diving event with a score of 305.45, good for eighth overall.
Day 2 Recap
November 30, 2012 - Zoe Hopkins got the record-breaking started on Thursday, and two of her older teammates kept the trend going Friday.
AT the second day of the three-day Calvin College Invitational, sophomores Rachael Kurtz and Cayley Cruickshank shattered school records for the Chargers. Thanks to an excellent all-around team effort, Hillsdale shot up in the team rankings from seventh to fourth in the nine-team meet, and have 201 points heading into Saturday's final day of competition.
Kurtz broke her own school record in the 50 free with a time of 23.77 seconds. She's hovered around the top of many top times lists in the sprint events in her young career, and turned in her best time in the shortest event Friday afternoon.
Cruickshank has made remarkable improvement and recovery, just within this season. She suffered an injury during wamrups at a home meet earlier this season, but is apparently well recovered, given her school-record time of 100 breaststroke (1:05.9). This is the first time Cruickshank has set a school record in her career.
Senior Sarah Leitner has a long list of impressive times in her career, but set a new personal mark with a 59.55 time in the 100 backstroke. Finishing slightly ahead of her in the same event was juniro Becca Remmes, who finished third overall with a season-best time of 58.88.
Day 1 Recap
November 29, 2012 - One of the longest meets of the season for the Hillsdale College women's swimming and diving team is taking place this weekend at Calvin College near Grand Rapids.
The Chargers completed the first day of competition Thursday night, and saw a school record fall in the process.
Freshman Zoe Hopkins (pictured) was entered into the mile (also known as the 1650 free) for the very first time and promptly set the school record in the event with a time of 18:04.11. Hopkins is a distance swimmer, and the 1650 isn't an event in every single meet, but she performed wonderfully for Hillsdale in her first shot at it. Hopkins placed ninth overall at the meet with her record-setting time.
Mikalah Smith also competed in the 1650 and won her heat with a time of 18:11.
After the first day, Hillsdale had 40 points and was in seventh place in the nine-team meet.
