Matt Hilkens enters his second season as the assistant coach for Hillsdale College women’s basketball in 2016-17. He brings a wide variety of experience, as well as enthusiasm, to his position with the Chargers. Hilkens works with all aspects of the program, including player development, recruiting, academic support, and opponent scouting.
Prior to his arrival at Hillsdale, he spent two years as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Siena Heights University, guiding the program to back-to-back 26-win seasons, and appearances in the NAIA national championship in 2014 and 2015. In each of his two seasons, the team neared national top 25 rankings.
In working primarily with the team’s guards, Hilkens guided two of his players to WBCA All-American honors in both 2013-14 and 2014-15. He was also the team’s video coordinator and admissions visit counselor.
Hilkens was the assistant women’s basketball coach at Owens Community College in 2012-13, and helped lead the program to a 28-8 record and a seventh-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament. One of his guards was named First-Team All-Conference that season.
Outside the college game, Hilkens was the Southern Michigan Program Coordinator for the Michigan Elite AAU Travel Team. He taught all aspects of team and individual player development with the club.
A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Hilkens as a wide variety of basketball camp experience throughout southern Michigan and northern Indiana. He graduated from the University of Toledo in December 2012 with a bachelor of arts in communications and finished his master’s work at Siena Heights in June 2015, specializing in Organizational Leadership.
