MARCH 4 RECAP
A mix of veterans and freshmen came through to help the Hillsdale College softball team to its first two wins of the 2018 season Sunday in Clermont, Florida.
Rookie pitchers Natalie Walters and Erin Hunt teamed up on a 1-0 shutout win over Mercyhurst University early Sunday morning. Right after that, the team picked up a 5-4 win over Bentley to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Walters pitched four innings, allowing three hits and no runs while Hunt tossed the final three and recorded five strikeouts, including the final three Laker batters in a row in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Junior Katie Kish scored the game's lone run off an RBI single by junior Amanda Marra. Kish reached base on a triple. Both Kish and Marra went 2-for-3 in the win, and junior Jessica Taylor added a double for Hillsdale.
In the day's second game versus Bentley, Hillsdale scored in each of the first three innings, then blanked Bentley the final three to hang on for the one-run win.
Marra had another big game, smacking a triple as part of a 3-for-3 day that included 2 RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Sam Catron went 2-for-3 with a run batted in during her season debut, and sophomore Carlin MacDonald-Gannon was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Hunt got the win with 3 1/3 innings of perfect relief work where she struck out five batters.
