Bekah Kastning Wins GLIAC Commissioner's Award

Bekah Kastning Wins GLIAC Commissioner's Award

Spring 2017 GLIAC Commissioner's Award Winners

Hillsdale College's Bekah Kastning made history throughout her amazing playing career on the Charger softball team. So it's only fitting that she would go down in school history as the last Charger athlete to win a GLIAC award.

Kastning was one of 12 GLIAC spring season athletes to be named recipient of the GLIAC Commissioner's Award. Hillsdale had two winners this season, Kastning and fellow senior Molly Oren. The GLIAC Commissioer's Award winners are chosen among student-athletes who are starter-level players in their sport and have maintained an overall grade point average of 3.5 or above.

A complete list of Commissioner's Award winners from Hillsdale College appears below.

No one appears on Hillsdale College softball's single-season and career top 10 statistical lists as often as Kastning, who was as complete a hitter as the program has ever seen. In 2017, she set Hillsdale's single-season hits record with 79 while batting .467 with 15 doubles, 40 runs scored and 27 runs batted in, all while batting leadoff all season. She helped Hillsdale to its fourth straight 20-win and winning season, a streak the program hasn;t had since the mid-1990s.

A four-year starter in center field, Kastning also set a GLIAC record with her 1.000 fielding percentage in 2017.

The breadth of her career statistical accomplishments have never been matched in Hillsdale College softball history. Totals of 234 hits, 46 doubles, 13 triples, 117 runs scored, 45 stolen bases, a .413 batting average and 13 home runs represent an unmatched stat line in program history. Kastning could simply do it all at the plate.

She was named First-Team All-GLIAC and First-Team All-Region twice and was the runner-up for 2016 GLIAC Player of the Year.

Kastning improved academically each year of her career as well, finishing with a 3.5 overall grade point average while majoring in exercise science. She was named Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District as a senior in 2017. She is the first and only softball player from Hillsdale to be named a winner of the GLIAC Commissioner's Award.

As the GLIAC era fades for Hillsdale College athletics, there are no two better individuals to win awards from the conference for the final time than Molly Oren and Bekah Kastning.
