One of the great Charger sports traditions is the Hillsdale College Gina Relays. This weekend, the 52nd annual running of this special event unfolds inside Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium.
More than 1,000 talented track athletes will trek to campus this week to participate in this three-day event, which kicks off Thursday afternoon. The field of athletes is a wide-ranging one, with Division III programs like Hope and Calvin appearing alongside several schools from the Mid-American Conference like Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Ball State. Notre Dame and Michigan State will also be sending athletes to run on the Ken Herrick Track.
Multi events get the weekend started at 3 p.m. Thursday. The open 3000 meter steeplechase and 5000 meter run will wrap up Thursday's schedule. Multi events continue Friday morning, with the first batch of field events getting underway at noon.
Prelim running events get started at 2:00. A tribute to Hillsdale's senior class preceeds the start of Friday night's championship races. The 4x800 relays go first, followed by one of the premier events of the Gina Relays, the steeplechase championships. The women's race is scheduled for 7:00, followed by the Bill Lundberg men's steeplechase championship at 7:30.
Saturday's schedule matches that of a more conventional track meet, with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m.
The event will be webcast by FloTrack for the second consecutive year. Please click on the FloTrack link at the top of this story to sign up to watch all the outstanding track action taking place here this weekend.
