This weekend, the Hillsdale College men's track and field teams continued their success at the Gladstein Invitational, held at Indiana University. The team competed against NCAA division I athletes representing, among others, the Ohio State University, Purdue University, Kent State University and Indiana University.
Junior Joshua Mirth finished third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:49.60. His time was about 2 hundredths of a second short of the top finish. Sophomore Nicholas Shuster (pictured) also tied for third in his event, the high jump, reaching 1.92 meters.
The senior class represented the Chargers with exceptional performances. John Banovetz continued his season with a fourth place finish in the shot put, throwing 15.96 meters. He also finished ninth, right behind fellow senior Brett Daily, in the weight throw. Matthew Raffin crossed the tape fifth in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing in 8.25 seconds. Maurice Jones carried on his success in the 200 meter invitational dash with a tenth place finish. His 22.60 second sprint followed the ninth place finisher by a hundredth of a second.
The Chargers' relay teams posted high finishes. The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of freshman Ty Etchemendy, senior Elliot Murphy, senior Jared Van Dyke and aforementioned Jones, finished fifth in the event with a time of 3:19. 42. The 4x800 meter relay team ( Gatchell, Fr. Andrew Beaird, Jr. Luke Hickman, and Sr. Matthew Van Egmond) took ninth with a time of 8:10.24.
The Chargers will compete again Feb. 1 at the Grand Valley State University Winter Classic in Allendale, MI.
