April 6, 2013 - After a two-week break in the schedule, the Hillsdale College men's track team got started on a busy final five weeks of the 2013 outdoor schedule by competing at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State University Saturday afternoon.
Leading the pack was sophomore Joshua Mirth, who legged out an outstanding performance in the 5000 meter run, placing second with a time of 14:46.78. Most of the competition present at the meet was a high Division I caliber, like the host Spartans, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and others.
The hurdler combo of Elliot Murphy and Matthew Raffin were factors in their events, with Raffin taking fifth in the 400 and seventh in the 110 event. Murphy ran his way to a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles, notching a time of 15.07 seconds.
Luke Hickman took seventh place in the 3000 meter steeplechase, finishing with a time of 9:45.8. The steeplechase is one of the marquee events at Hillsdale College's home track meets.
Freshman Nick Shuster continued his excellent rookie campaign by taking fifth in the high jump (6-5), while thrower John Banovetz earned two more top-10 finishes, placing sixth in the discus (157-1) and fourth in the shot put (52-10 3/4).
