March 23, 2013 - Junior thrower John Banovetz thrived on a heavy workload in Saturday's outdoor season opener for the Hillsdale College men's track team.
Banovetz participated in all three throwing events, finishing second in the shot put (51-8.5), second in the discus (159-6.75) and first in the hammer throw (179-8.5) in the Polar Bear Invitational, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan in Marion, Ind.
The team's 400 meter relay team took first with a time of 42.82 seconds, while distance runner Joshua Mirth took first in the 5000 meter run. Matt Raffin and Elliot Murphy took first and second in the 400 hurdles, each finishing less than a second apart.
Mirth won his race by 12 seconds and got off to a strong start, entering the third leg of what has turned into a terrific 2012-13 season. he was an All-American in cross country, and was a GLIAC champion during the indoor season.
