A season-opening tournament is a chance for most men's tennis teams to work some kinks out and get used to playing again.
For Hillsdale College's team, it was a chance to rack up some wins right off the bat.
The team participated in the West Liberty Invitational in West Virginia, and Charger players combined for an 18-9 record at the season-opening event. Some matches Hillsdale players were scheduled to play still need completion, which will at the Mary Jane Delp Courts starting at 3:30 Tuesday.
Other participating teams in the invitational were Bluefield State, Fairmont State, Edinboro, West Liberty, Tiffin, Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan.
Milan Mirkovic, one of the top freshmen in the region in 2016-17, got off to a good start in his sophomore season by winning the No. 1 singles flight, beating Bluefield State's Alex Rudenco 4-6, 6-1, 3-0 (ret.). Rudenco was ranked among the top 40 players in Division II last year.
John Ciraci took top honors in the No. 3 singles flight with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Edinboro in the finals.
Julian Clouette and freshman Gabe Katz each made it to the finals in their flights, but those matches will be played Tuesday at Hillsdale. Katz and fellow Charger newcomer Nico de Enrique Schmidt advanced to the finals of the 3-4 doubles flight as well.
