In his very first career game as Hillsdale College head baseball coach, Eric Theisen walked away a winner.
The first-year Chargers head coach guided his team to a 3-2 win over Davis & Elkins in the 2014 season opener Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. Hillsdale fell in the second half of the doubleheader 6-1 to even its record at 1-1 in the brand-new season.
Theisen was the team's pitching coach for three seasons before taking over the top job last summer. The result of his excellent work with the staff over the years was evident in the team's win.
Junior Shane Armstrong picked up the win in the first game, going 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and just three hits allowed. All-time saves leader Dan Pochmara got his first of the new season, fanning two batters in his only inning on the hill.
At the plate, sophomore outfielder Luke Ortel smacked two hits and scored a run, while sophomore Tad Sobieczszanski added an RBI. Sean Bennett also drove in a run and freshman Jake Lee had an RBI in his collegiate debut.
Lee had a two-hit game in the nightcap for the Chargers. Junior Vinny Delicata scored the team's lone run in that game, while sophomore Lincoln Reed had a run batted in. Daivs & Elkins scored four runs in the sixth inning to break open a close contest.
Hillsdale's games vs. Alderson-Broaddus, scheduled for Sunday, have been canceled.
